This is something to witness once in every few months in Plettenberg Bay as part of a rehabilitation initiative by the Nature’s Valley Trust, Tenikwa Wildlife Rehabilitation and Awareness center, SANParks and Plett Birdlife. The birds are often found by people walking on beaches where the penguins have been caught in an oil spill at sea, sick or malnourished, or just tired and washed up and don’t have the strength or means to carry on on their own. People take the birds to local Veterinary Hospitals in their area where contact is made with Tenikwa who will either fetch or organize that the birds get to the Rehabilitation Centre and this is all done with donations from the public. On the 26th April ten penguins waddled back into the ocean at Lookout Beach in Plettenberg Bay – and back to the freedom of the seas. The penguins, with names like Dublin, Flipper, Elias and Carolus, braved the breakers back into the Indian Ocean and on to join their raft or colony they came from.
